Moving to Deming area

Postby leonscabin on Fri Oct 30, 2009 8:01 pm

Good evening to the rock members,
My wife and I live near Del Rio, Texas on the lake, We are going to relocate to the Deming area and want to be a part of the rock family that is living in there. We have only passed through Deming on the highway in the past 50 + years but never had time to stop and look.
We go in now and look at the area on our Google Earth, It is fun and easy but it is nothing like walking and looking. We have looked at the Columbus area and thought that might be a Quiet place to retire. We sure are open to your ideas and input on any place in your area.
We belong to our local club but there are NO Agates here, Just sedimentary limestone with very few fossils, And most of them are soft.
Our nearest agates are in the big bend area and there is so few places to search. and the places to go are pay for what you find.
I owned the Deer creek Fire Agate Mine in the 70's, But it is owned now by some nice folks. My wife Suzanne teaches computer classes at the library and I just do my silver work and grind my rocks. We have bought Gem & mineral books for all of the western states. as we still are not sure where we might relocate to. We are like a lot of older folks we just do not like cold weather. so we think it is way better to be hot than wet and cold. I lived in a tent when I was a young boy 35 miles out of Las Vegas during the war. So I know how cold that desert can get and how hot, But I can handle the heat but the cold just hurts this old frame. at 73 I can still walk those hills when it is hot. I bet some of you all are from up north too and know all about the cold up there. I will ask Suzanne to tell you all a little bit about her self so if we do settle in your area you all will know a tad bit about your newcomers. I have managed ranches in Texas as well as Brazil, I went to work in the oil fields of west Texas at age 13 so education I do not have. Just lifes school of hard knocks. My handle is Hard Rock. Born in Brady Texas . 4-28-36. never have seen the inside of a jail;. I did get a speeding ticket 20 or so years ago.
I do speak a good bit of Spanish as well as Portuguese. Do not smoke, I do have a cold beer every few months, IF it is a hot day.
Happy hunting to all of you, Leon Hughes. 303 Holman Drive Del Rio, Texas, 78840 432-293-4704. :D
